Madeleine Valier, the Advocacy Team's outstanding summer intern completed and presented her final project entitled, "Testimonials as a Tool for Advocacy," on July 26, 2017. Her project explored the value of using visual media and video for advocacy initiatives, policy updates, calls to action, story sharing and training.
Transferring her research into practice, Madeleine visited Mary's Center and Unity Health Care, two community health centers in Washington, D.C. that provide health care, family literacy and social services to individuals whose needs are often unmet by public and private systems. Over the course of two days, she interviewed staff and patients on camera to find out why they value Mary’s Center and Unity Healthcare. Madeleine used the footage to create, “A Look Inside Community Health Centers,” a short film which features testimonials from individuals that she interviewed at the two health centers.
“A Look Inside Community Health Centers” proves that Mary’s Center and Unity Health Care, as well as other health centers around the country, provide more than just primary care. Health centers offer services that extend beyond medical visits and lead patients toward stability and independence. Madeleine’s film also emphasizes the power of video for publicizing the incredible value of community health centers.
