15 Apr 2019 Grassroots Advocacy Hall of Fame Inductee Spotlight: Roland Goertz, M.D.
Dr. Roland Goertz served the Heart of Texas Community Health Center for nearly 22 years as the Chief Executive Officer. Dr. Goertz graduated from medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and completed his residency at John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth. He then completed a clinical teaching fellowship in family medicine in 1986.
When he first came to Waco, HOT was a community clinic struggling to stay afloat and meet community healthcare needs. Dr. Goertz lead the efforts to turn the clinic into a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in 1999. Since then, the health center has grown tremendously, with 15 center locations and an 80% increase in the number of patients being served. Goertz stated in a Waco-Tribune Herald article that he expects the center will soon be providing care to 60,000 people. Goertz has held many leadership positions on various committees and associations, including his position as national president of the American Academy of Family Physicians from 2010-11.
After 22 years at Heart of Texas, Dr. Goertz recently retired. Dr. Jackson Griggs has taken Dr. Goertz’s place as CEO as of early 2019. Dr. Griggs is excited to continue and build off of the amazing work of Dr. Goertz. Dr. Goertz has three children and six grandchildren and is looking forward to spending more quality time with them and his wife Rosemary during his retirement.
